Elite and College Athletes Compete at Sam AdamsPublished by
The first day of the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational saw world caliber decathletes and pentathletes compete alongside college athletes from both NAIA and NCAA institutions on the beautiful Westmont College Track in the foothills of Montecito. The event is named for former UC Santa Barbara track and field coach Sam Adams who spent a lifetime training elite level multi-event athletes and coaching college track and field competitors.
The men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon were each divided into two competitions designated "A" and "B" with the elite level athletes assigned to the "A" competition.
The men's decathlon "A" competition started with the 100 meters, which was won by Ashton Eaton in a time of 10.43. Eaton, the reigning world champion and Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon, is one of several athletes competing in selected events. Steven Bastien of Samford (Ala.) took second in the event with a time of 10.85 with J. Patrick Smith of Chico State (Calif.) finishing third in a time of 10.95. Smith is an alumnus of local Dos Pueblos High School.
